You mean something like this Jeff? It's just insulation tape wrapped around them to help with grip.
I got this in 2007, he hasn't changed much, just got older. Living in Denmark and still plays for Slade (Mk.2) but no Noddy & Jim. He recently guested on Danish band, The Guv'nors, album, Pint Of No Return.
